Minister Vengu Highlights Corridor VIII’s NATO Status and Albania’s Growing Role in Regional Security
Minister of Defense Pirro Vengu announced that Albania is strengthening its role in regional and allied security. Corridor VIII was also approved as part of NATO’s critical infrastructure. This development places Albania at the center of investments in military mobility and strategic connectivity in the region.
During the monthly press conference, Vengu announced that the Albanian Armed Forces will increase their engagement in the KFOR mission in Kosovo. Within the next six months, Albania will include an air component in its contribution to the mission for the first time.
At the international level, the minister emphasized that Albania is expanding its network of military attachés in the United States, European Union countries, and the region. This expansion aims to strengthen Albania’s cooperation with allies and integrate its defense industry into European supply chains and joint defense projects. The minister also referred to the inaugural meeting of the Peace Board, where issues related to the interests of Albanians in the region were discussed. Albania expressed its readiness to contribute to the International Stabilization Force in Gaza. Initially, participation will be through officers in staff structures, and operational details will be determined in coordination with the countries leading the mission.
Regarding civil emergencies, the Armed Forces are engaged throughout the country to address the consequences of heavy rainfall, conduct search-and-rescue operations, and repair damaged infrastructure. In cooperation with relevant institutions, the Ministry of Defense is preparing a compensation package for agricultural and livestock damages, while compensation for housing damages and fire-related damages has already been finalized and the funds distributed. Meanwhile, the conditional civil protection fund has been allocated this year based on risk assessment, significantly increasing funding for municipalities with limited capacities. Additionally, 18 million euros will be invested in preventive infrastructure.
The minister announced new measures to strengthen the country’s ability to manage civil emergencies, focusing on modernizing the land and air fleets. He stated that new emergency vehicles are currently in production and will be transferred to the municipalities in greatest need, which marks the beginning of the national fleet renewal process. Meanwhile, negotiations for the purchase of two firefighting aircraft are nearing completion, with the goal of having at least one operational by the end of the year. Vengu stressed that the Air Force and General Staff are working to increase the readiness of existing assets to ensure that at least four helicopters are available for emergency situations.
The minister also provided updates on efforts to strengthen the Armed Forces’ human capital. During the first phase of recruitment alone, 252 new soldiers were accepted, bringing the total number of additional personnel to approximately 1,000 over the past 14 months. Meanwhile, departures from service have significantly decreased. Meanwhile, the recruitment of reservists has begun, as have procedures for selecting the first cadets of the aviation school. Training for helicopter pilots is expected to begin after the training aircraft arrive in May.
Another priority is developing the defense industry, which is expected to create 326 new jobs this year producing ammunition, uniforms, and drone systems. The first drone assembly line is expected to begin operations in April, and ammunition production is scheduled to start in July.
Additionally, Albania is advancing its cooperation with international defense industry companies to facilitate technology transfer and product certification for allied markets. Approval is also expected in the coming days for the establishment of a joint company with the Italian partner Fincantieri for ship production at the Pashaliman naval base.
According to Minister Vengu, these developments aim to build real defense capabilities, strengthen national security, and bolster Albania’s contribution to regional and Euro-Atlantic security.
