Minister Vengu in Budapest as Albania and Hungary Deepen Defense Cooperation

Albania and Hungary have agreed to strengthen their cooperation in defense, military innovation, and security. Budapest has also reaffirmed its full support for Albania’s European integration. These were the key messages of the bilateral meeting between Albanian Minister of Defense Pirro Vengu and his Hungarian counterpart, Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky. The meeting was followed by a joint press conference in Budapest.
During the official visit, the two countries signed two agreements: one to strengthen civilian cooperation in defense and another between defense innovation institutions to increase participation in European programs and funding. The discussions also focused on integrating defense industry supply chains among allied countries and developing joint defense capabilities.
Minister Vengu praised Hungary’s continued support for Albania’s European integration process. He highlighted progress in opening negotiation clusters and advancing reforms while underlining the strategic importance of Southeastern Europe for the continent’s security. He also emphasized the two countries’ cooperation in international missions, including KFOR and the European Union mission in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In his remarks, Vengu noted that Albania has welcomed significant investments from leading Hungarian companies. He described these investments as an important pillar of bilateral cooperation that is expected to expand into the defense sector. He also expressed gratitude for Hungary’s operational support in addressing civil emergencies, especially during last year’s wildfire season in the eastern Mediterranean.
In turn, Hungarian Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky lauded Albania’s contribution to the stability of the Western Balkans and reaffirmed Hungary’s unwavering support for Albania’s accession to the European Union. He commended the efforts to modernize the Albanian Armed Forces in line with NATO standards.
The visit to Hungary included meetings focused on the defense industry and innovation. Minister Vengu visited Pro Patria Electronics in Budapest, where he was presented with the company’s technological capabilities in radar systems and the protection of critical infrastructure. The visit aimed to identify opportunities to integrate Albania’s defense industry into allied supply and innovation chains to strengthen the Armed Forces’ capabilities in the long term.
