Minister Hoxha EU Membership a Strategic Priority Diaspora Summit a Platform for Concrete Cooperation
Albania continues to pursue European Union membership as a national strategic priority while aiming to strengthen ties with its diaspora and modernize its foreign service. These were among the key messages delivered by Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs Ferit Hoxha during a press conference.
The minister emphasized that the EU accession process continues to guide the country’s reforms and described it as a profound social and economic transformation that goes beyond a purely technical process. He stated that Albania has made significant progress in advancing negotiations, a fact confirmed by European institutions and member states.
In this context, strengthening the rule of law, ensuring the proper functioning of the justice system, combating corruption and organized crime, and improving public administration remain core to reforms.
Another key focus was the fourth Albanian Diaspora Summit, which will take place in Tirana from April 13 to 15, 2026. According to the minister, the summit aims to serve as a concrete platform for cooperation between Albanian institutions and compatriots worldwide. It will encourage investment and the exchange of expertise while promoting the greater involvement of the diaspora in the country’s development.
The summit will include 18 thematic panels on topics such as the economy, education, innovation, and culture. It will also address important issues, such as diaspora voting rights and expanding their role in decision-making processes.
Regarding regional developments, Hoxha emphasized the importance of stability and cooperation in the Western Balkans, reiterating support for Kosovo and commitment to good neighborly relations. He also addressed the issue of the use of the Albanian language in North Macedonia, stressing that it is a constitutional right that must be respected and handled through institutional channels without politicization.
When discussing the foreign service, the minister emphasized the importance of modernizing it in accordance with international dynamics and the European integration process. According to the minister, Albania requires diplomacy that is more flexible, professional, and responsive, with a focus on protecting national interests and, in the future, contributing to the shared interests of the European Union.
The minister concluded that modernizing the foreign service is essential to meeting new challenges and fulfilling the standards required for EU membership.
