Albania Signs $6 Billion Gas Deal as Partnership with the US Strengthens Energy Security and Regional Role

Albania has signed a strategic energy agreement with the United States and Greece. The agreement includes a 20-year supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is part of a $6 billion project. This initiative aims to bolster energy security, diversify energy sources, and strengthen Albania’s position in the regional energy market.
Implementation of the project will be carried out in cooperation with Venture Global and Aktor LNG and will include developing infrastructure for importing and distributing natural gas. This will position Albania as a key hub in the Western Balkans.
Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Enea Karakaçi emphasized that the agreement is a pivotal step in transforming the energy sector by reducing dependence on hydropower and increasing system resilience. He stated that the strategic partnership with the United States will support the development of a diversified, long-term energy model based on long-term planning and a shared vision for a secure and sustainable energy future.
A central component of the project is the development of the Vlora Energy Hub. This includes the revitalization of the existing power plant, construction of new generation capacities, and expansion of gas storage and processing infrastructure. The project also includes constructing the Fier–Vlora pipeline to connect the hub to the regional transmission network. Vlora is expected to become a strategic point for gas import and distribution in the region. This will contribute to increased production capacity, energy source diversification, and strengthened energy independence for the country.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle highlighted Albania’s role as a reliable partner and key actor in the Balkans. She noted that the natural gas agreement strengthens regional cooperation and contributes to building a more secure and sustainable energy system in Southeastern Europe.
This agreement is an important step toward integrating energy markets and increasing supply security. It positions Albania as a strategic energy gateway in the region and strengthens its cooperation with international partners.
