Opening remarks at extraordinary press conference by Prime Minister Edi Rama

I apologize for any inconvenience due to these odd hours, but it is an extraordinary press conference regarding tomorrow’s joint session of the governments in Gjakova.

I have notified Prime Minister Kurti that with Kosovo’s relations with the entire Euro-Atlantic community aggravating every hour, it is impossible for this meeting to take place according to the arranged format.

After having talked with the European Union’s foreign policy chief Joseph Borrel today afternoon, I have asked Albin to meet tomorrow in Gjakova in a narrower format, namely a meeting of the foreign and defense ministers to precisely discuss this situation that is dramatically splitting up Kosovo from the Euro-Atlantic community to an unimaginable point, with the latter actually having  put its finger on the button that will set in motion the plan of sanctions against the state that it has created itself.

Unfortunately and with great regret I have to acknowledge that we didn’t agree with Prime Minister Kurti on a change to the format and he demanded that the meeting be held normally and we discuss this matter as well, but this is impossible, because it is not a moment to create a false picture of what is actually happening in the today’s reality of Kosovo.

It is perhaps not the final response by the Prime Minister, I really very much hope we can meet to exchange our opinions at a time when, I reiterate, we are on the verge of putting the plan into motion, because I don’t wish to even think about sanctions, but of austerity measures against a state that was created by those who are now clearly losing their patience.

I made an effort to ask for a little more time, I was granted a little more time, but if we fail to make use of this time for common sense among all, I’m very afraid that the plan, which is really very severe for Kosovo, will be set in motion.
