PM Rama welcomes EU leaders. President Michel: Future to be more prosperous with Western Balkans within EU

The first-ever summit between EU and Western Balkan leaders is taking in Tirana on Tuesday.

The Summit’s agenda began with reception of the EU and Western Balkan leaders by Prime Minister Edi Rama at Tirana’s “Italia Square”, heading then to the hotel “Marriot” at Air Albania Stadium where the Summit is being held.

The President of the European Council Charles Michel spoke to reporters shortly after being welcomed by Prime Minister Rama, considering this day a very exciting moment as the first-ever summit between EU and Western Balkan leaders is taking place in a Western Balkan country.

“It is the first time we hold a EU Summit in one of the countries in the region. I am absolutely convinced that the future of our children will be safer and more prosperous with the Western Balkans within the EU and we are working very hard to make progress,” Michel said.

According to him, the Summit clearly shows the EU support for the Western Balkans.

“We will sign an agreement on roaming charges today. This is an important and tangible step relative to what we have discussed in Brdo. This is also an important step also in terms of the support for the Balkans in the face of the energy crisis and the effects of the Russian aggression. This shows our commitment to strengthening cooperation with the region,” Michel concluded.
