The Shefqet Ndroqi Regional Hospital Center in Kavajë, which provides healthcare services to more than 100,000 residents of Kavajë, Rrogozhinë, and surrounding areas, has undergone rehabilitation to improve its infrastructure and transform it into a center of excellence for healthcare services. Prime Minister Edi Rama, Albana Koçiu, Minister of Health and Social Protection, and Elisa Spiropali, Socialist Party delegate for the Tirana district, visited the hospital, which serves as a model for faster and higher quality health services close to home, not only for the residents of Kavajë but also for the many tourists who vacation in Golem, Mali i Robit, Qerret, and Spille.
Minister Koçiu emphasized that the partnership between the Kavajë Municipal Hospital and the Shefqet Ndroqi University Hospital has strengthened and increased specialized healthcare services locally. “Kavajë Hospital has partnered with Shefqet Ndroqi University Hospital to provide quality health services to the residents,” she said. “We are currently renovating the facility to improve conditions and infrastructure,” Koçiu said.
She highlighted the hospital’s unique feature of having doctors and nurses who work at both Shefqet Ndroqi in Tirana and its unit in Kavajë. “We offer services such as surgery, orthopedics, and physiotherapy. Doctors from Shefqet Ndroqi come to Kavajë according to scheduled service plans, allowing for the exchange of knowledge with local doctors and further improving the hospital’s services,” she explained.
In particular, the minister noted improvements in surgical services, which are now available at the facility due to shared management—something that was not the case six years ago. In addition, a rehabilitation unit for patients with chronic lung disease has been established for the first time. “Physiotherapy is now available for the entire Kavajë district. We have all the necessary parameters for rehabilitation, just like in European hospitals, including gyms and specialized equipment. We treat about 20 patients a day,” said one of the doctors.
To further improve access to health care close to where people live, Minister Koçiu also announced the establishment of the Berat-Kuçovë Regional Hospital Center.
The Shefqet Ndroqi Regional Hospital Center in Kavajë is equipped with advanced diagnostic imaging equipment and offers services in internal medicine, general surgery, maternity care, pediatrics, and, for the first time, a pulmonary rehabilitation unit. The expansion of the emergency services has also improved response capabilities for Kavajë and the coastal area from Golem to Spille, especially during the summer season when the number of visitors increases significantly.
Since the partnership between the two hospitals, the emergency department has handled approximately 18,720 cases in 2024 alone.
Investments in hospital infrastructure improvements include a three-layer waterproofing of the hospital’s roof to address severe moisture problems, a complete renovation of the 10,000 m² terracotta and textured façade, and the rehabilitation of corridor floors in the maternity and pediatric wards.
