Security Council, Minister Hasani: Albania is committed to advancing priorities even after the end of the mandate.

In the last speech to the Security Council, at the end of Albania’s two-year mandate as a non-permanent member, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani, emphasized that Albania will continue its work priorities beyond the mandate.

During the Open Debate of the Security Council on the topic “Treatment of the threat posed by diversion, illegal trafficking and misuse of small and light weapons and their ammunition, for peace and security, Minister Hasani stressed that Albania implements all obligations to respecting international arms control agreements, as he underlined that only a strong cooperation between different actors can help to properly address this situation.

“In all these efforts, regional cooperation is of great importance. In our region, in the Western Balkans, special attention is paid to cooperation, coordination and joint actions by all countries, relevant local agencies and the international community. In this context, I would like to mention the Franco-German initiative on small arms and light weapons, within the Berlin Process, as part of joint efforts to solve the problem of small arms in the region, until the end of next year “, he said.

While in the meeting organized by Albania, for the acceleration of the “Women, Peace and Security” program, as one of the main priorities of Albania’s work during the 2-year mandate in the Security Council, Minister Hasani assured that all the priorities that our country had during the mandate in the SC, they will continue to be so even after December 31, 2023.

“It was our duty to support this program across the breadth of SC work, through proactive engagement to ensure that the agenda was fully and meaningfully integrated in all aspects. Soon we will finish our two-year term in the Council, but our commitment in the field of Women’s Peace and Security will continue. We will continue to engage in this important effort, not only here in New York, but also in Geneva and everywhere,” said Minister Hasani.
