New initiatives for Urban Modernization as Process begins for Organizing Overhead Cables and Electronic Networks
Prime Minister Edi Rama, along with representatives from local governments and relevant institutions, met to discuss the modernization of electronic communications infrastructure, the organization of overhead cables, and the gradual transition to underground infrastructure. The meeting examined how to improve urban standards and link them with European Union regulations.
Ervin Demo, Minister of State for Local Government, underlined that non-standard overhead cables are both an aesthetic issue and a public safety concern. He believes that municipalities will play an important role in defining priority areas and conducting the infrastructure organization process.
The action plan calls for a preliminary phase in July and August to establish working groups and coordinate institutional efforts, with field interventions beginning in September. The first phase will concentrate on urban centers, historical sites, and places of special significance.
Enea Karakaçi, Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, indicated that the country is developing telecommunications networks in accordance with European Union standards, with the goal of achieving advanced 5G coverage by 2030. He highlighted that the goal is to ensure high-speed internet access throughout the country by expanding modern electronic communication networks and aligning legislation with European norms.
He also stated that funding has been acquired for places that still need network connectivity through the Western Balkans Investment Framework. The initiative, worth 110 million euros, includes a 35 million euro subsidy from the European Union, and intends to enhance electronic communications network coverage throughout the country.
During the discussion, it was noted that modernizing electronic communications infrastructure and strengthening inter-institutional coordination will help to improve quality of life, urban growth, and compliance with European integration criteria.
