Minister Gogu Says European Commission Report Confirms Consolidation of Justice Reform

Albania has entered the phase of consolidating justice reform, according to Minister of Justice Toni Gogu, who cited the completion of the transitional re-evaluation process (vetting), the decrease in pending cases at the Supreme Court, the start of the digitalization process of the justice system, and inter-institutional cooperation in the most recent European Commission report on the Rule of Law.
The minister stated at a press conference that the study, which was created by the European Commission using the same methods used for Western Balkan nations and members of the European Union, is a significant evaluation of the advancements made in justice reform.
Minister Gogu claims that the report views the screening process’ completion as a significant turning point in strengthening the judicial system’s independence and integrity. Additionally, he emphasized that the paper shows the Supreme Court’s 60% decrease in pending cases, characterizing it as a positive development that is anticipated to expand to courts of appeal and first instance courts as well.
The minister also spoke on the justice system’s digitalization process, highlighting how it will improve case management and decrease wait times while boosting service efficiency and transparency and facilitating citizens’ access to the legal system. He continued by saying that the Ministry of Justice plays a coordinating role in the report’s emphasis on inter-institutional cooperation among justice institutions.
The report also highlights other issues that need more focus, such as expediting the evaluation process, correcting systemic gaps, bolstering the battle against corruption, and boosting public confidence in the legal system. Minister Gogu claims that advances in the caliber and effectiveness of judicial services as well as citizens’ experiences with the system will be used to gauge the new phase of justice reform.
