Minister Nufi Emphasizes Prevention Over Response in Civil Protection
Ermal Nufi, the minister of defense, emphasized the significance of bolstering fire safety regulations and preventive measures, especially in light of the fast growth of cities and the building of more intricate structures.
Speaking at the international conference “Tirana Fire Safety 2026,” he said that fire safety needs to be considered from the beginning of building design, not just after construction is finished.
In reference to the summer wildfire issue, Minister Nufi stated that as of September 9, 2026, the civil protection system had responded to 81 significant fire occurrences, using 180 aircraft operations, more over 14,600 troops, and almost 1,350 ground vehicles. The State Police, the armed forces, fire and rescue services, local government organizations, forestry services, protected area administrations, and volunteers were all participating in these activities.
The minister emphasized that the civil protection system should prioritize risk reduction, prevention, readiness, and institutional cooperation in addition to emergency response.
Additionally, the minister emphasized the necessity of collaboration between professionals, governmental institutions, and the private sector through the use of contemporary technologies, safe building design, efficient inspections, and clear standards. Initiatives to improve a culture of prevention and lessen the harm caused by civil crises will continue to receive support from the Ministry of Defense, the National Civil Protection Agency, and other organizations.
The minister also mentioned Albania’s involvement in the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, characterizing it as a chance to implement European best practices, improve standards, train staff, and create interoperable capabilities.
Fire safety specialists, engineers, architects, public officials, and representatives of the construction sector come together for the two-day international conference and exhibition “Tirana Fire Safety 2026” to examine issues and advancements in fire safety in contemporary buildings.
