New School Year Begins with 25,000 Children Entering School for the First Time

Today, marks the start of the 2026–2027 school year nationwide, with almost 25,000 kids starting school for the first time. The extension of the “After School” program, additional investments in educational infrastructure, and improved student safety and psychosocial support measures are all part of the current school year.
39 more projects for the reconstruction of educational institutions have been approved, and 53 new or renovated schools will open this year.
With over 400 security guards and 900 psychologists and social workers working in schools around the nation, safety is another major priority for the new school year. In the meantime, 20 schools in Tirana and Kamza are part of the “Smart City” pilot project, which uses smart cameras to improve security.
This year, 408 schools nationwide will participate in the “After School” program, which was first implemented in Tirana last year. In addition to receiving assistance with their schoolwork, students will be allowed to stay at school after courses to engage in extracurricular activities including art, music, theater, athletics, and crafts. This year, new textbooks for elementary school students in grades one through five have been given away for free. Additionally, the first day of school will be organized differently, with an emphasis on acquainting children with the rules, behavioral expectations, and structure of the educational establishment.
The application of artificial intelligence as a tool to aid in learning is another recent breakthrough. Teachers and students may utilize artificial intelligence tools to enhance teaching and learning, according to guidelines created by the Ministry of Education and released by the Agency for Quality Assurance of Pre-University Education.
Minister of Education Mirela Kumbaro wished parents, teachers, and students a successful start to the new school year. She also highlighted advances in school environment, safety, and the chances provided for students through extracurricular and curricular activities.
The Ministry of Education has released preliminary data indicating that approximately 1,200 children have migrated from private to public schools this year.
